Celtic Dogs and Livestock

The Celts were known for breeding animals for specific characteristics:

  • Scottish, Irish, and Welsh dogs were used for herding, guarding, in battle, for hunting and for companionship. Celtic dogs will participate in the Festival Gathering at Noon and can be seen at the Pat and Chat tent. We invite owners of Celtic dogs to join the parade–just fill out the application below.
  • Scottish Highland cattle are an old breed with the ability to thrive in less than ideal circumstances and are in demand for today’s market. Cattle are on display during the festival in the Livestock Pavilion.

  • Falconry is the art of hunting with birds of prey such as a trained hawk or falcon. Once a popular form of hunting for food, it continues today as a sport among enthusiasts. Falcons are on display during the festival, and a falconry exhibition will take place on the fairground field.

  • Sheep and sheep herding play a key role in Scottish culture. Sheep are on display in the Livestock Pavilion throughout the day. Border collies will demonstrate herding techniques on the fairground field–as you’ll see, a properly trained dog is able to move sheep anywhere.
